No matter what happens in the All-Star Game on Tuesday night, the White Sox’s most powerful fan just made sure his favorite team left the most indelible mark.
President Barack Obama, wearing a black Sox jacket, tossed out the first pitch to open up the Midsummer Classic at Busch Stadium in St. Louis. There was a lot of hoopla surrounding whether his pitch would make it to Albert Pujols’ glove before it hit the dirt, and it appeared to do so, but television viewers can’t be certain thanks to the strange angle Fox decided to use to show the pitch. (Seriously, with all the cameras the Fox folks have at the game, that is the best one they came up with?)
Aside from the obvious national symbolism, Obama’s pitch represents two main points in my mind:
First and foremost, the sight of Obama, the first black president, standing on the mound at the national pastime’s premier summer event is an important historical landmark no matter what your political affiliation might be. It was a little more than 62 years ago that Jackie Robinson became the first MLB player to break the color barrier; the abuse he took at that time and throughout his career was well-documented, and the idea that an African-American man now holds arguably the most important job in the world must have Robinson smiling somewhere.
The other point, albeit not nearly as important, is the fact that Obama has never swayed from his support of the South Siders despite the need to be politically correct. The White Sox have been the “second” baseball team in the Windy City for a while now, thanks to the national popularity of the Cubs. Obama doesn’t care about that, though: “I’m not a Cubs hater … I just don’t root for ‘em, that’s all,” he explained to Joe Buck during the Fox telecast.
Obama’s loyalty to the White Sox gives Jerry Reinsdorf’s franchise the type of exposure even the North Siders can’t match. The black Sox hat he wore during and after his successful presidential campaign became one of the most popular caps in the country; his wardrobe choice Tuesday night is going to make the black Sox jacket one of this summer’s hottest items. I’m sure they are being ordered like crazy right now on the team’s Web site, especially after this endorsement:
